Just a teaspoon, suddenly the orchid miraculously blooms with lots of flowers

That headline is a common gardening clickbait claim. There is no single teaspoon of any ingredient that will magically make an orchid produce lots of flowers overnight.

For orchids (especially Phalaenopsis orchid), healthy blooming depends mainly on:

  • Adequate light (bright, indirect sunlight)
  • Proper watering (allow roots to dry slightly between waterings)
  • Appropriate fertilizer (a balanced orchid fertilizer used according to directions)
  • Temperature changes (many orchids initiate flower spikes after cooler nighttime temperatures)
  • Healthy roots and potting medium

Some viral posts recommend a teaspoon of things like rice water, banana peel water, coffee grounds, baking soda, garlic water, or sugar. Most of these have little scientific support, and some can even harm orchids by encouraging mold, pests, or root damage.

A more reliable approach is:

  1. Provide bright indirect light.
  2. Fertilize lightly during active growth.
  3. Maintain good humidity and airflow.
  4. Repot when the growing medium breaks down.
  5. Give the plant time—many orchids bloom only once or twice a year.

If you tell me what type of orchid you have and whether it’s struggling to bloom, I can give more specific advice.
