The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

Some beverages can negatively affect bone health when consumed frequently or in large amounts, especially if they displace calcium-rich foods or interfere with calcium absorption. Health experts commonly point to these five categories as the most concerning:

  1. Sugary soft drinks (especially colas)
    Colas often contain phosphoric acid, which may disrupt calcium balance when intake is high. Heavy soda consumption is also associated with lower bone mineral density, partly because people may drink less milk or other calcium-rich beverages.
  2. Excessive alcohol
    Regular heavy drinking can reduce the body’s ability to absorb calcium and vitamin D, interfere with bone-building cells, and increase fracture risk over time.
  3. Highly caffeinated energy drinks
    Very high caffeine intake may slightly increase calcium loss through urine. Energy drinks can also contain large amounts of sugar and additives that make them less ideal for long-term bone health.
  4. Ultra-sugary coffee beverages
    Sweetened coffee drinks loaded with syrups and whipped cream may contribute indirectly to weaker bones if they replace nutritious foods and lead to excess sugar intake. Moderate plain coffee is generally considered acceptable for most adults.
  5. Sweetened iced teas and processed fruit drinks
    Many bottled teas and fruit-flavored beverages contain high sugar levels with little nutritional value. Frequent consumption may crowd out healthier choices like milk or fortified alternatives that support bone strength.

Experts generally recommend focusing on beverages that support bone health, such as:

  • Milk and fortified plant milks
  • Water
  • Calcium- and vitamin D–fortified drinks
  • Moderate tea or coffee intake

For stronger bones overall, adequate calcium, vitamin D, protein intake, and weight-bearing exercise are more important than avoiding any single drink entirely.
