Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

That headline is basically a cleaning hack teaser, but there are real, effective ways to clean pillows safely depending on the material.

Here’s how to actually do it so they come out cleaner, fresher, and less yellowed:

Step 1: Check the pillow type

Most pillows are:

  • Cotton/polyester filled (machine washable)
  • Memory foam (NOT machine washable)
  • Down/feather (gentle wash only)

Always check the label first.

Step 2: Machine washing (for most regular pillows)

If your pillows are washable:

  • Wash 2 pillows at a time to balance the machine
  • Use warm water + mild detergent
  • Add an extra rinse cycle to remove soap fully

For whitening and odor removal:

You can add:

  • ½ cup baking soda (odor control)
  • OR ½ cup white vinegar in rinse cycle (breaks buildup)

Step 3: Drying properly (very important)

Improper drying causes smell and mold.

  • Tumble dry on low heat
  • Add clean tennis balls or dryer balls to keep fluffiness
  • Dry completely—can take 1–2 cycles

Step 4: For memory foam pillows

Do NOT soak or machine wash.

Instead:

  • Spot clean with mild soap + water
  • Press gently (don’t wring)
  • Air dry in shade with good airflow

Step 5: Dealing with yellow stains

Yellowing is usually from sweat and body oils.

To reduce it:

  • Pre-soak in warm water + mild detergent + baking soda
  • Gently scrub stained areas before washing
  • Sun-dry occasionally (sunlight helps deodorize and brighten)

Step 6: Keep them “smelling sweet” longer

  • Wash pillow covers weekly
  • Use breathable pillow protectors
  • Air pillows in sunlight every few weeks
  • Avoid sleeping with wet hair or heavy oils

Important reality check

You can make pillows clean, fresh, and lighter in color, but:

  • Old deep yellow stains may not fully disappear
  • “Bright white like new” is not always realistic without harsh bleaching (which can damage fabric)

If you want, I can also show you a simple 10-minute routine to keep pillows fresh without washing them often, which is what most housekeeping experts actually recommend.
