The claim that watering geraniums in one special way will keep them “always thriving” and covered in flowers is an exaggeration. There isn’t a single watering technique that guarantees continuous blooming.
Here are the practices that actually help geraniums flower well:
🌸 Water deeply, not constantly
- Water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot or the soil is well moistened.
- Let the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil dry before watering again.
- Avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy, as this can lead to root rot.
☀️ Provide plenty of sunlight
- Geraniums bloom best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight most days.
🌱 Fertilize regularly
- During the growing season, use a balanced or bloom-supporting fertilizer according to the label directions.
- Too much nitrogen can produce lots of leaves but fewer flowers.
✂️ Remove spent blooms
- Deadheading faded flowers encourages the plant to direct energy into producing new blooms.
🪴 Ensure good drainage
- Use well-draining potting mix and containers with drainage holes.
Be cautious of online advice recommending watering with milk, sugar, baking soda, coffee, or other household ingredients. These methods are not well supported by evidence and may do more harm than good by affecting soil health or attracting pests.
If you’ve seen a specific “water them like this” recipe, tell me what it recommends, and I can explain whether it’s likely to help or harm your geraniums.
