That headline is an exaggeration.
No home remedy can reliably burn weeds in one day and ensure they never grow back. Most DIY treatments kill only the visible parts of the plant, while roots often survive and the weeds regrow.
Common remedies include:
- Boiling water: Effective for weeds growing in cracks in driveways or sidewalks, but it can also kill nearby desirable plants.
- White vinegar: Can damage the leaves of young weeds, especially on sunny days, but household vinegar usually doesn’t kill deep roots.
- Hand pulling: Often the most effective method if you remove the entire root.
- Mulch or landscape fabric: Helps prevent new weeds from germinating.
For long-term control, you’ll usually need a combination of:
- Removing the roots.
- Preventing new seeds from sprouting.
- Repeating treatment as needed.
The claim that weeds will “never grow again” is not realistic. Even if existing weeds are eliminated, new weed seeds can blow in or already be present in the soil, so ongoing maintenance is typically required.
