11 ways to get your peace lily to bloom

If your peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is healthy but not flowering, it usually needs the right balance of light, water, nutrients, and care. Here are 11 ways to encourage blooms:

  1. Give it brighter indirect light
    • Peace lilies tolerate low light but often bloom better in bright, filtered light.
    • Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch leaves.
  2. Water consistently
    • Keep the soil lightly moist, but don’t let the roots sit in soggy soil.
    • Drooping leaves can be a sign it needs water, but yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering.
  3. Use well-draining soil
    • A loose potting mix helps prevent root problems caused by excess moisture.
  4. Avoid an oversized pot
    • Peace lilies often bloom better when slightly root-bound. A pot that is too large can encourage leaf growth instead of flowers.
  5. Feed with a balanced fertilizer
    • During the growing season, a diluted houseplant fertilizer can support flowering.
    • Avoid overfertilizing, which can damage roots and cause leaf issues.
  6. Provide warmth and stable conditions
    • Keep the plant away from cold drafts, heaters, and sudden temperature changes.
  7. Increase humidity
    • Peace lilies prefer humid environments.
    • A humidifier, pebble tray, or grouping plants together can help.
  8. Clean the leaves
    • Dust can reduce light absorption. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth.
  9. Remove old flowers
    • Cutting off spent blooms allows the plant to focus energy on new growth.
  10. Check for pests
  • Spider mites, scale, or other pests can weaken the plant and reduce flowering.
  1. Be patient
  • A peace lily may produce leaves for a while before blooming again. Seasonal changes and plant maturity affect flowering.

Tip: If your peace lily has lots of healthy green leaves but no flowers, the most common causes are not enough bright indirect light, too much fertilizer, or the plant being too young/not in the right growth stage.
