A month before a stroke, your body warns you: 10 signs not to ignore

A stroke can sometimes be preceded by warning signs, but the idea that your body always warns you exactly one month before a stroke is not medically proven. Some symptoms can appear suddenly and require urgent attention.

Possible warning signs that should not be ignored include:

  1. Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg—especially on one side of the body
  2. Sudden trouble speaking, understanding speech, or confusion
  3. Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes
  4. Sudden dizziness, loss of balance, or difficulty walking
  5. A sudden severe headache with no known cause
  6. Brief episodes of stroke-like symptoms that go away (possible transient ischemic attacks, or TIAs)
  7. New difficulty coordinating movements or unusual clumsiness
  8. Sudden facial drooping or an uneven smile
  9. New problems with memory, thinking, or alertness
  10. Unexplained episodes of weakness or faintness

A useful emergency check is FAST:

  • F — Face drooping
  • A — Arm weakness
  • S — Speech difficulty
  • T — Time to call emergency services

If these symptoms appear suddenly, seek emergency medical help immediately—even if they go away. Early treatment can greatly affect outcomes.
