Who Is Most at Risk of Night Cramps?

Night cramps—often called nocturnal leg cramps—are sudden, painful muscle contractions that usually affect the calves, feet, or thighs during rest or sleep. They are common and can happen to anyone, but some people have a higher risk.

People More Likely to Experience Night Cramps

1. Older adults

Night cramps become more common with age, partly because of:

  • Natural changes in muscles and nerves
  • Reduced flexibility
  • Less physical activity
  • Changes in circulation

2. People who are physically active or overuse their muscles

Hard exercise, prolonged standing, or unfamiliar activity can strain muscles and trigger cramps.

Common triggers:

  • Long walks or runs
  • Heavy workouts
  • Standing for many hours

3. Pregnant people

Leg cramps are common during pregnancy, especially in later months. Changes in body weight, circulation, and mineral needs may contribute.

4. People who are dehydrated

Not drinking enough fluids—especially with heavy sweating—may increase the chance of muscle cramps.

5. People with certain medical conditions

Night cramps may be more common in people with:

  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Nerve problems (neuropathy)
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Circulation problems

6. People taking certain medications

Some medicines may increase the risk of cramps in some individuals, including certain:

  • Diuretics (“water pills”)
  • Some blood pressure medications
  • Some cholesterol-lowering medicines

Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

7. People with mineral or nutrient imbalances

Low levels of certain minerals, such as potassium, calcium, or magnesium, can contribute to muscle problems in some cases. However, taking supplements is not always helpful unless a deficiency is present.

8. People with poor sleep position or reduced mobility

Staying in one position for a long time or limited movement may contribute to muscle stiffness and discomfort
