How to Use Baking Soda to Remove Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles from Your Face

Can Baking Soda Remove Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles?

Claims that baking soda can remove dark spots, wrinkles, and dark circles are not supported by good scientific evidence. In fact, applying baking soda to your face may do more harm than good.

Why baking soda isn’t recommended for facial skin

Baking soda is highly alkaline (it has a much higher pH than healthy skin). Using it regularly on your face can:

  • Disrupt the skin’s natural protective barrier
  • Cause dryness and irritation
  • Lead to redness and peeling
  • Potentially worsen sensitive skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea

It is not a proven treatment for wrinkles, dark spots, or under-eye circles.

Better ways to address common skin concerns

For dark spots (hyperpigmentation)

Ingredients with good evidence include:

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher every day)
  • Vitamin C
  • Niacinamide
  • Azelaic acid
  • Retinoids (when appropriate)

Sun protection is especially important because UV exposure can make dark spots worse.

For wrinkles

To help reduce the appearance of fine lines:

  • Use sunscreen daily
  • Apply a moisturizer regularly
  • Consider retinoids (with guidance if needed)
  • Avoid smoking

For dark circles

Dark circles can have many causes, including:

  • Genetics
  • Lack of sleep
  • Allergies
  • Aging
  • Thin skin under the eyes

Helpful measures may include:

  • Getting enough sleep
  • Treating allergies if present
  • Using sunscreen
  • Trying products containing caffeine or retinol formulated for the eye area (if tolerated)

If you still want to use baking soda

It’s best to avoid using baking soda as a facial mask or scrub, especially if you have sensitive skin. There are safer, better-studied skincare ingredients available for cosmetic concerns.

When to see a dermatologist

Consider professional advice if you have:

  • Dark spots that change in size, shape, or color
  • Persistent skin irritation
  • Rapidly changing moles or pigmented lesions
  • Skin concerns that don’t improve with over-the-counter products
