What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

Blood pressure does not have one exact “normal” number for every age. In general, healthy blood pressure is usually around 120/80 mmHg or lower for adults, but the ideal range can vary depending on age, health conditions, medications, and individual risk factors.

Blood pressure is written as:

  • Systolic (top number): pressure when the heart pumps
  • Diastolic (bottom number): pressure when the heart relaxes

Typical blood pressure ranges by age (general guide)

Age group Common healthy range (approx.)
Newborns About 60–90 / 30–60 mmHg
Infants (1–12 months) About 70–100 / 50–65 mmHg
Children (1–5 years) About 80–110 / 50–80 mmHg
Children (6–12 years) About 90–120 / 60–75 mmHg
Teenagers (13–18 years) About 100–120 / 65–80 mmHg
Adults (18–39 years) Around 110–130 / 70–85 mmHg
Adults (40–59 years) Around 110–135 / 70–85 mmHg
Adults (60+ years) Often around 120–140 / 70–90 mmHg (individual goals vary)

Adult blood pressure categories (commonly used)

  • Normal: less than 120/80
  • Elevated: 120–129 and less than 80
  • High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 or 80–89
  • High blood pressure (Stage 2): 140+ or 90+
  • Very high / urgent: around 180/120 or higher, especially with symptoms

Seek urgent medical attention if blood pressure is very high with:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe headache
  • Confusion
  • Weakness/numbness on one side
  • Vision changes
  • Fainting

A single reading does not always diagnose a problem. Blood pressure should usually be checked more than once, when you are rested and seated properly.

If you tell me your age, blood pressure reading (for example 135/85), and whether you take medicines like metoprolol, I can help interpret it.
