10 Early Signs of Dementia You Should NEVER Ignore

Dementia is a group of conditions that affect memory, thinking, and daily functioning. Some changes can be a normal part of aging, but persistent or worsening symptoms deserve medical evaluation.

Here are 10 early signs of dementia that should not be ignored:

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
    • Frequently forgetting recently learned information or important dates.
    • Repeatedly asking the same questions.
  2. Difficulty planning or solving problems
    • Trouble following familiar recipes, managing finances, or concentrating on tasks.
  3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
    • Problems driving to familiar places, operating household appliances, or following the rules of a favorite game.
  4. Confusion about time or place
    • Losing track of dates, seasons, or where they are, or becoming disoriented in familiar settings.
  5. Problems with language
    • Difficulty finding the right words, following conversations, or repeating themselves.
  6. Misplacing items and being unable to retrace steps
    • Putting things in unusual places and being unable to figure out where they went.
  7. Poor judgment or decision-making
    • Changes such as unusual spending, neglecting personal hygiene, or making unsafe choices.
  8. Withdrawal from social or work activities
    • Avoiding hobbies, social events, or conversations because they’re harder to follow.
  9. Changes in mood or personality
    • Increased anxiety, irritability, depression, suspicion, or apathy that is out of character.
  10. Difficulty understanding visual information
  • Trouble judging distances, recognizing objects, or navigating familiar environments, beyond what can be explained by an eye condition.

When to seek medical evaluation

If these symptoms are:

  • Persistent or getting worse,
  • Interfering with everyday life, or
  • Noticed by family or friends,

it’s important to see a healthcare professional. Early assessment can identify treatable causes of memory problems—such as medication side effects, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, depression, or sleep disorders—as well as diagnose dementia if present.

Having one or two of these symptoms does not necessarily mean someone has dementia. Many other medical conditions can cause similar problems, and a proper evaluation is needed to determine the cause. Early diagnosis can help with treatment, planning, and support.
