Fresh blueberries can last much longer when stored properly. While they usually won’t stay fresh for months in the refrigerator, the right methods can greatly extend their life — and freezing is the best way to keep them for months.
How to store blueberries so they last longer
1. Don’t wash them before refrigerating
- Moisture encourages mold growth.
- Keep berries dry and rinse them just before eating.
2. Remove bad berries first
- Discard any soft, crushed, leaking, or moldy berries.
- One moldy berry can speed up spoilage of the rest.
3. Store them in the refrigerator
- Keep blueberries in a breathable container lined with a paper towel.
- Avoid sealing them in an airtight container while they’re damp.
- Refrigerated blueberries often last about 1–2 weeks when stored well.
4. For months of storage: freeze them
- Sort and remove damaged berries.
- Rinse quickly and dry completely.
- Spread them in a single layer on a tray.
- Freeze until solid.
- Transfer to freezer bags or containers.
Frozen blueberries can keep their quality for about 6–12 months.
Extra tip: vinegar wash (optional)
Some people use a diluted vinegar rinse (for example, 1 part vinegar to several parts water) to reduce surface microbes, but it must be followed by a thorough rinse and complete drying. It is not a guarantee against mold.
Proper storage helps blueberries stay flavorful, but “fresh for months” usually means frozen, not sitting in the fridge.
