The Salted Lemon Air Purifier

If by “The Salted Lemon Air Purifier” you mean the popular social-media tip of placing a lemon covered with salt in a room to “purify the air,” remove toxins, improve breathing, or eliminate germs, there is no scientific evidence that it works as an air purifier. Claims that salted lemons clean indoor air are not supported by research.

Lemons can provide a pleasant citrus scent, and salt can absorb a small amount of moisture from the air, but that is very different from actually filtering pollutants, smoke, dust, allergens, or microbes. Effective air purification requires technologies such as HEPA filtration or other proven systems.

Some people enjoy keeping salted lemons in a room because:

  • They add a fresh fragrance.
  • They can be decorative.
  • The ritual may make a room feel cleaner or more relaxing.

However, these benefits are not the same as air purification.

If your goal is cleaner indoor air, proven approaches include:

  • Using a HEPA air purifier.
  • Improving ventilation.
  • Reducing indoor smoke and dust sources.
  • Maintaining appropriate humidity levels.
