Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Cleaning dirty bed pillows and getting them back to white and fresh-smelling is very doable at home, as long as you check the care label first.

1) Check the pillow type

Most Polyester pillows and cotton-filled pillows can be washed in a machine, but memory foam pillows usually should not be fully submerged.

2) Pre-treat stains

If your pillows have yellow spots or sweat stains:

  • Mix baking soda + a little water into a paste
  • Rub it gently on stained areas
  • Or use a mild liquid detergent directly on the stain for 15–20 minutes

3) Wash properly

  • Use hot water (if label allows) for better cleaning and killing bacteria
  • Add a normal amount of detergent
  • For extra whitening and odor removal, add:
    • ½ cup baking soda
    • 1 cup white vinegar (added during rinse cycle)

Wash two pillows at once to balance the machine.

4) Extra rinse cycle

Run an extra rinse to remove all detergent and vinegar smell.

5) Dry completely (very important)

  • Use low heat in the dryer
  • Add clean tennis balls or dryer balls to keep pillows fluffy
  • Make sure they are 100% dry inside, or they can develop a bad smell or mold

6) Freshen between washes

  • Sprinkle baking soda on pillows, leave for 30 minutes, then vacuum
  • Air them in sunlight occasionally to kill odor-causing bacteria
