Common (usually mild) side effects
These are more realistic and often manageable:
- Swelling in ankles or feet (very common)
- Headache
- Flushing or warmth in face
- Dizziness (especially at start)
- Fatigue
- Mild palpitations
Less common but more important side effects (seek medical advice if persistent)
- Significant swelling that worsens
- Very low blood pressure (feeling faint)
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Severe dizziness
Rare but serious reactions (urgent medical attention needed)
- Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling of face/lips)
- Chest pain worsening instead of improving
- Signs of liver issues (yellowing skin/eyes)
- Severe drop in blood pressure with fainting
Important reality check
- There is no valid list of “12 worst side effects you should NEVER ignore” that applies to everyone
- Most people tolerate Amlodipine well
- Doctors prescribe it because benefits in preventing stroke and heart disease are much greater than risks
Why ankle swelling happens (most common concern)
Amlodipine relaxes blood vessels, which can cause fluid to pool in lower legs. It is:
- Not dangerous in most cases
- Dose-related (higher dose = more swelling)
- Sometimes managed by adjusting medication
