No drink has been proven to cure Peripheral Neuropathy or chronic pain. However, some beverages can support overall health or help address underlying factors, especially when combined with appropriate medical treatment.
Here are five drinks that may be beneficial:
- Water
- Staying well hydrated supports normal nerve and muscle function.
- Dehydration can sometimes make discomfort or muscle cramps feel worse.
- Green tea
- Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
- Some research suggests it may help reduce inflammation, but evidence for neuropathy relief is limited.
- Turmeric tea (golden milk)
- Contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties.
- Studies are ongoing, and there is not enough evidence to conclude it relieves neuropathy pain.
- Tart cherry juice
- Contains antioxidants that may help reduce muscle soreness and inflammation.
- Its benefit for chronic nerve pain specifically is not well established.
- Fortified milk or plant-based milk
- Can provide nutrients such as vitamin D or vitamin B12 if fortified.
- A deficiency in Vitamin B12 can contribute to neuropathy, so correcting a deficiency is important. However, extra B12 won’t help if your levels are already normal.
If you have Type 2 Diabetes, choosing unsweetened beverages is generally preferable to help manage blood sugar, since good glucose control can slow the progression of diabetic neuropathy.
For chronic nerve pain, treatments with stronger evidence include:
- Treating the underlying cause (such as diabetes or a vitamin deficiency).
- Regular physical activity, if appropriate.
- Medications prescribed specifically for neuropathic pain.
- Physical therapy in some cases.
If you have numbness, burning, or tingling in your feet or hands, tell me:
- your age,
- how long you’ve had symptoms,
- whether you have diabetes or another medical condition,
and I can help explain the most likely causes and common treatment options.
