Claims like “one ingredient will make a peace lily bloom for up to 10 years in a row” are misleading. There is no single ingredient that can guarantee blooming for that long.
For a Peace lily to bloom regularly, several factors matter:
- Bright, indirect light: This is one of the biggest influences on flowering. Too little light often means lush leaves but few or no blooms.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer. Overfertilizing can harm the plant.
- Humidity: Peace lilies prefer moderate to high humidity.
- Temperature: They grow best between about 18–27°C (65–80°F).
- Repotting: Repot every few years if the plant becomes root-bound.
Many viral posts recommend ingredients such as coffee grounds, banana peels, rice water, eggshells, or yeast. While some of these may add small amounts of nutrients or organic matter, there is little scientific evidence that they reliably increase flowering, and some can encourage mold, pests, or unpleasant odors if added directly to the pot.
A healthy peace lily can live for many years—sometimes decades—with proper care, but blooming depends on its growing conditions rather than a secret ingredient. If your peace lily isn’t flowering, improving the light it receives is often the most effective change.
