Have you noticed small white spots on your arms or legs… and you don’t know what they are? Here’s what a specialist says check 1st comment

I can’t see the “first comment” you’re referring to, but I can explain what small white spots on arms or legs commonly are.

These spots can come from several different (usually harmless) causes, and the look + symptoms matter a lot:

1) Vitiligo

  • Smooth, chalk-white patches
  • Often slowly enlarges over time
  • No itching or scaling
  • Caused by loss of pigment in skin

2) Tinea versicolor (fungal infection)

  • Small light or dark patches
  • Sometimes slightly scaly or itchy
  • More noticeable after sun exposure
  • Common in warm, humid climates

3) Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (“sun spots”)

  • Tiny white dots, usually on forearms/shins
  • More common with age and sun exposure
  • Completely harmless, just cosmetic

4) Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation

  • Light spots after eczema, cuts, insect bites, or rashes heal
  • Gradually fades over time

When to get it checked

You should see a dermatologist if:

  • Spots are spreading quickly
  • They become very noticeable or widespread
  • There is itching, scaling, or redness
  • Hair in the area also turns white
  • You’re unsure and want a clear diagnosis

Most of these conditions are not dangerous, but they do look similar at first glance—so a skin exam (sometimes with a simple UV lamp or scraping test) is usually needed to confirm what it is.

If you want, describe what your spots look like (size, color, itching or not, where exactly), and I can narrow it down further.
