Warning! If you have found this insect (silverfish) in your home, it’s a sign that you need to…see more…

That headline is another example of a clickbait post. The missing ending is meant to encourage clicks, but the reality is more straightforward.

If you’ve found a Silverfish in your home, it usually means the environment is favorable for them—not that there’s an unusual danger.

Silverfish are attracted to:

  • High humidity (bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, kitchens)
  • Dark, undisturbed areas (closets, storage boxes, behind appliances)
  • Food sources such as paper, cardboard, book bindings, wallpaper paste, fabrics containing natural fibers, and starchy residues

Finding one or two occasionally isn’t unusual. However, seeing many of them may indicate:

  • Excess moisture or poor ventilation
  • Water leaks
  • A growing infestation

To reduce or eliminate silverfish:

  • Lower indoor humidity (ideally below 50%) using ventilation or a dehumidifier.
  • Fix leaking pipes or faucets.
  • Store paper, books, and clothing in dry, sealed containers.
  • Vacuum regularly, especially along baseboards and in closets.
  • Seal cracks and gaps where they can enter or hide.
  • If the infestation is significant, consider using appropriate insect traps or contacting a pest control professional.

Silverfish are not known to bite people or spread diseases. Their main nuisance is that they can damage books, wallpaper, clothing, and stored paper products over time.
