Everyone has made this mistake. What is the normal bl00d pressure for each age?

Many people make the mistake of thinking blood pressure should rise “normally” as you get older. While blood pressure can change with age, there is no separate “healthy” high blood pressure level just because someone is older. The general goal for many adults is to keep blood pressure below 120/80 mmHg, though personal targets can vary based on health conditions and advice from a clinician.

Approximate categories:

Age group Typical healthy target (general guide)
18–39 years Around <120/80 mmHg
40–59 years Around <120/80 mmHg (individual goals may vary)
60–79 years Often still aiming for controlled blood pressure; many guidelines use targets around <130/80 mmHg for many adults
80+ years Targets are individualized based on overall health, frailty, and medication tolerance

Blood pressure categories (adults)

  • Normal: Less than 120/80
  • Elevated: 120–129 and less than 80
  • High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 or 80–89
  • High blood pressure (Stage 2): 140 or higher or 90 or higher

Remember:

  • A single high reading does not always mean you have hypertension. Stress, pain, caffeine, exercise, and incorrect measuring technique can temporarily raise it.
  • Measure correctly: rest for about 5 minutes, sit with your back supported, keep your feet flat, and use a properly fitting cuff.

Seek urgent medical help for a blood pressure reading around 180/120 mmHg or higher, especially with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or vision changes.
