How to Remove Bleach Stains from Fabrics with 2 Tricks

If a fabric has true bleach stains, the color has usually been chemically removed, so you generally can’t “wash the stain out.” However, you can often hide, recolor, or repair the spot. Here are two useful tricks:

Trick 1: Neutralize and recolor the spot

  1. Rinse the bleach-affected area thoroughly with cool water.
  2. Mix 1 part white vinegar with 2 parts water and dab the area to help neutralize leftover bleach (don’t mix vinegar directly with fresh bleach).
  3. After rinsing and drying, use a fabric dye marker or matching fabric dye to blend the spot back into the original color.

Trick 2: Turn the mark into a design

  • For small bleach spots, use a fabric pen, embroidery, patch, or intentional tie-dye effect.
  • For dark clothes (black, navy, etc.), fabric dye designed for that material can sometimes restore the appearance more evenly.

Important: Don’t mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners—dangerous fumes can form. For delicate fabrics like silk, wool, or expensive garments, it’s safer to consult a professional cleaner.
