That “it means you have calcium deficiency” claim is mostly a myth.

Lines on nails can mean different things depending on what they look like:

If they are small vertical ridges (running from cuticle to tip), they’re usually harmless and often just part of normal aging, dry nails, or genetics.

If they are horizontal lines or grooves, those are called Beau’s lines. These can appear after something temporarily interrupts nail growth—like a high fever, infection, major stress on the body, injury, or sometimes illness or surgery.

Other possible causes of nail changes include:

  • Nutritional issues (not just calcium—iron, zinc, or protein can matter more)
  • Skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis
  • Repeated trauma (picking, tapping, manicures)

So the short version:
Lines on nails are not a reliable sign of calcium deficiency. They’re more like a “record” of what your body or nails went through a few months ago.

If the lines are new, deep, or paired with other symptoms (brittle nails, fatigue, hair loss), that’s when it’s worth checking with a doctor.
