The Fastest Way to Get Rid of Shower Silicone Mildew

If you need to get rid of mildew on shower silicone quickly, the best method depends on whether the mold is sitting on the surface or has grown into the sealant.

Quick surface treatment

  1. Dry the silicone first — moisture makes treatments less effective.
  2. Use a mold remover or diluted bleach solution
    • Mix 1 part household bleach with 10 parts water.
    • Soak paper towels or cotton strips in the solution and press them onto the moldy silicone.
  3. Leave it for 30–60 minutes.
  4. Scrub gently with an old toothbrush.
  5. Rinse and dry completely.

For stubborn black spots

If the silicone stays black after cleaning, the mildew has likely grown inside the silicone, not just on the surface. In that case, cleaning may lighten it but usually won’t remove it permanently.

The fastest long-term fix:

  • Cut out the old silicone.
  • Clean and disinfect the area.
  • Allow it to dry fully.
  • Apply new mold-resistant bathroom silicone sealant.

Prevent it from coming back

  • Run the bathroom fan during and after showers.
  • Dry shower corners and silicone seams.
  • Avoid leaving standing water along the edges.
  • Repair cracked or peeling silicone early.

For a quick improvement, the bleach-soaked paper towel method is usually the fastest; for deeply embedded mildew, replacing the silicone is the reliable solution.
