What Is Atorvastatin and Why Is It Commonly Prescribed?

Atorvastatin is a medication in a group called statins. It is commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.

How atorvastatin works

Atorvastatin blocks an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase, which reduces the liver’s production of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Lower LDL levels can slow the buildup of fatty plaques in arteries.

Why doctors prescribe it

It may be prescribed for people who:

  • Have high LDL cholesterol.
  • Have had a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease.
  • Have diabetes or other risk factors that increase heart disease risk.
  • Have a high estimated risk of developing heart disease in the future.

Common benefits

  • Lowers LDL cholesterol (often significantly).
  • Can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in appropriate patients.
  • May help stabilize cholesterol plaques in blood vessels.

Possible side effects

Many people take atorvastatin without major problems, but possible side effects include:

  • Muscle aches or weakness.
  • Mild digestive symptoms.
  • Headache.
  • Changes in liver enzyme levels (usually monitored with blood tests if needed).

A rare but serious side effect is severe muscle injury (rhabdomyolysis), which may cause severe muscle pain, weakness, or dark urine and requires urgent medical attention.

Important considerations

  • Do not stop atorvastatin suddenly without discussing it with your healthcare professional; stopping may increase cardiovascular risk in some people.
  • Tell your clinician about other medicines or supplements you take because some can interact with statins.
  • Avoid excessive grapefruit consumption if your healthcare professional has advised you to limit it, as grapefruit can interact with some statins.

If you are taking atorvastatin, the dose (for example 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg) and the reason it was prescribed can help explain what benefits and risks are most relevant for you.
