What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

There is no single “normal” blood pressure number for each age. Blood pressure varies by person, health conditions, medications, activity level, and measurement conditions. In general, healthy adult blood pressure is often around:

Normal range (adults):

  • Systolic (top number): less than 120 mmHg
  • Diastolic (bottom number): less than 80 mmHg

A commonly used guide:

Age group Typical healthy target (approx.)
Children Varies greatly by age, height, and sex
Teens (13–17) Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg
Adults (18–39) Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg
Adults (40–59) Often still targeted below 120/80 mmHg, though averages may rise
Adults 60+ Many guidelines aim for below 130/80 mmHg if tolerated, but targets may be individualized

Blood pressure categories for adults:

  • Normal: <120 / <80
  • Elevated: 120–129 / <80
  • High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 or 80–89
  • High blood pressure (Stage 2): ≥140 or ≥90

A single high reading does not always mean you have hypertension. Blood pressure should usually be checked more than once, when you are rested and using proper technique.

If you share the person’s age, blood pressure reading (for example 145/90), and whether it was measured at home or at a clinic, I can help interpret it.
