The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

Health experts often point to certain drinks as potentially harmful to bone health when consumed frequently, mainly because they may affect calcium intake, bone mineral density, or overall nutrition. The evidence varies, and occasional consumption is unlikely to have a major effect. Commonly discussed drinks include:

  1. Sugary soft drinks (sodas)
    • High intake is associated in some studies with lower bone health, possibly because people may replace calcium-rich drinks (like milk) with soda.
    • Some colas also contain phosphoric acid, which has been studied for possible links to bone mineral balance.
  2. Excessive alcohol
    • Heavy alcohol consumption can interfere with calcium absorption, affect hormones involved in bone maintenance, and increase fracture risk.
  3. Energy drinks
    • Often high in caffeine and added sugar. Very high caffeine intake may slightly reduce calcium retention, especially if calcium intake is already low.
  4. Sweetened coffee drinks
    • Large amounts of added sugar and high caffeine intake may contribute indirectly to poorer bone health if they displace nutritious foods and drinks.
  5. High-sugar fruit drinks and sports drinks
    • These can add a lot of sugar without providing much calcium or other nutrients that support bones.

For stronger bones, the most consistently recommended choices are water, calcium-rich beverages (such as fortified milk or plant milks), and a balanced diet with adequate vitamin D, protein, and minerals.
