HOW TO REMOVE SET-IN GREASE STAINS FROM LAUNDRY

How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains from Laundry

Grease stains can be some of the toughest marks to remove, especially if they’ve already been washed and dried. Heat from a tumble dryer can set oily stains into fabric, making them more difficult to lift. Fortunately, with patience and the right approach, many set-in grease stains can still be removed.

Why Grease Stains Are So Stubborn

Unlike water-based stains, grease and oil don’t dissolve easily in water. Over time, they bind to fabric fibres, and high heat can make them even harder to remove.

What You’ll Need

  • Washing-up liquid (designed to cut through grease)
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Baking soda (optional)
  • A soft toothbrush or soft-bristled brush
  • Warm water (check your garment’s care label first)

Step 1: Apply Washing-Up Liquid

Place a few drops of washing-up liquid directly onto the stain. Gently rub it into the fabric using your fingers or a soft brush.

Leave it to sit for 10–15 minutes so it can break down the grease.

Step 2: Add Baking Soda (Optional)

For heavier stains, sprinkle baking soda over the treated area. It can help absorb leftover oil and provide gentle abrasion when lightly brushed into the fabric.

Allow it to sit for another 10–15 minutes, then brush away the excess powder.

Step 3: Wash with Liquid Detergent

Wash the garment using a good-quality liquid laundry detergent according to the care label. Choose the warmest water temperature that’s safe for the fabric, as warmer water often helps remove oily residues.

Step 4: Air-Dry First

Before using a tumble dryer, inspect the stain carefully.

If any trace remains:

  • Repeat the treatment.
  • Do not machine dry the garment until the stain has disappeared, as heat can make it even more difficult to remove.

For Older, Stubborn Stains

If the stain has been there for weeks or months:

  1. Apply washing-up liquid.
  2. Leave it for 30 minutes.
  3. Wash the garment.
  4. Repeat the process if needed.

Some stains require several treatments before they disappear completely.

Fabrics That Need Extra Care

For delicate materials such as:

  • Silk
  • Wool
  • Cashmere
  • Rayon

Always follow the care label and consider using a detergent designed for delicate fabrics. If the garment is labelled “Dry Clean Only,” it’s safest to have it professionally cleaned rather than treating it at home.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don’t use the tumble dryer until the stain is gone.
  • Don’t scrub aggressively, as this can damage fabric fibres.
  • Don’t use bleach unless the garment’s care label says it’s safe.
  • Don’t assume one treatment is enough for old stains.

Prevention Tips

  • Treat grease stains as soon as possible.
  • Wear an apron while cooking.
  • Check clothes for stains before putting them in the dryer.
  • Keep a stain-removal product or washing-up liquid handy for quick treatment.
