4 Types of People Who Should Be Careful With Eating Cabbage

Cabbage is a highly nutritious vegetable rich in fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and plant compounds. For most people, it is a healthy addition to the diet. However, certain individuals may need to limit their intake or eat it with caution because it can worsen specific health issues.

Here are four groups who may need to be careful.

1. People With Thyroid Problems (Especially Untreated Hypothyroidism)

Cabbage belongs to the cruciferous vegetable family, which also includes broccoli, cauliflower, and kale.

These vegetables contain compounds called goitrogens, which may interfere with the thyroid’s ability to use iodine in some situations.

Who should be cautious:

  • People with iodine deficiency
  • People with poorly controlled hypothyroidism
  • People who consume very large amounts of raw cruciferous vegetables

Important: For most people, normal servings of cooked cabbage are not a problem. Cooking reduces many goitrogenic compounds.

2. People Taking Blood-Thinning Medication

Cabbage contains vitamin K, which plays an important role in blood clotting.

People taking vitamin K–sensitive blood thinners, such as Warfarin, should avoid making sudden large changes in their cabbage intake.

Better approach:

  • Keep vitamin K intake consistent.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about major diet changes.

You usually do not need to completely avoid cabbage unless advised.

3. People With Gas, Bloating, or Sensitive Digestion

Cabbage contains:

  • Fiber
  • Certain carbohydrates that can ferment in the gut

For some people, especially those with digestive sensitivities, cabbage may trigger:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Cramping

Tips:

  • Start with small portions.
  • Try cooked cabbage instead of raw cabbage.
  • Eat slowly and chew well.

4. People With Certain Digestive Conditions

People with conditions such as:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Some inflammatory bowel conditions during flare-ups
  • Certain food intolerances

may find cabbage difficult to digest.

A healthcare professional or dietitian can help identify whether cabbage needs to be reduced or avoided
