Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

The claim that everyone over 65 should avoid daily showers is an oversimplification. The best bathing routine depends on your skin, health, activity level, climate, and personal preferences.

For many older adults, daily showering is perfectly fine, especially if it’s done in a skin-friendly way. However, long, hot showers with harsh soaps can contribute to dry, itchy skin.

Why Skin Changes With Age

As we get older, the skin naturally:

  • Produces less oil
  • Becomes thinner and more fragile
  • Loses moisture more easily

This makes it more prone to:

  • Dryness
  • Itching
  • Cracking
  • Irritation

Frequent washing with hot water can worsen these issues.

When Daily Showers May Be Too Much

Some older adults may benefit from showering less often if they:

  • Have very dry or eczema-prone skin
  • Experience itching after bathing
  • Are mostly indoors and not sweating much

In these cases, showering every other day may help preserve the skin’s natural protective barrier.

Tips for Healthier Showers

  • Use warm rather than hot water.
  • Keep showers to about 5–10 minutes.
  • Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser instead of harsh soaps.
  • Apply a moisturiser within a few minutes of drying off to help lock in moisture.
  • Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing vigorously with a towel.

Areas That Should Still Be Cleaned Daily

Even if you don’t shower every day, it’s generally a good idea to wash:

  • Underarms
  • Groin and genital area
  • Feet
  • Face (as needed)
  • Hands frequently throughout the day

When Daily Showers Make Sense

Daily bathing may still be appropriate if you:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Sweat heavily
  • Work outdoors
  • Have been exposed to dirt or contaminants
  • Need frequent bathing for a medical or personal care reason
