How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new, shiny appearance: a simple recipe

If you mean eyeglasses, be careful with “scratch-removing recipes” you may see online. Most DIY methods (toothpaste, baking soda, glass cleaners, car wax, etc.) do not actually remove scratches—they usually just polish the surface unevenly or damage lens coatings.

Safer ways to improve the appearance of scratched glasses

1. Clean the lenses properly first

  • Rinse lenses with lukewarm water.
  • Use a drop of mild dish soap.
  • Dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

Sometimes what looks like scratches is actually built-up residue or coating damage.

2. Use a microfiber cloth only

  • Avoid paper towels, tissues, or clothing, which can create tiny abrasions.
  • Wipe gently in circular motions.

3. If the scratches are real

  • Minor scratches: Some people notice them less after applying a quality lens cleaner, but they won’t be removed.
  • Deep scratches: The reliable fix is replacing the lenses, especially for prescription glasses.

Avoid these common “hacks”

❌ Toothpaste
❌ Baking soda paste
❌ Car polish
❌ Window cleaner
❌ Abrasive powders

These can remove anti-reflective, anti-glare, or UV coatings and may make vision worse.

To prevent future scratches:

  • Store glasses in a hard case.
  • Never place lenses face-down.
  • Rinse off dust before wiping.
  • Use a clean microfiber cloth.

If you mean sunglasses, phone glasses/lenses, or another type of glass surface, the best method may be different.
