Everyone has made this mistake. What is the normal bl00d pressure for each age?

What Is Normal Blood Pressure for Each Age? A Clear Guide

A common mistake is thinking there is one “normal” blood pressure number that changes only with age. In reality, healthy blood pressure targets are based on overall health, medical conditions, and individual risk—not age alone.

Blood pressure is measured as:

  • Systolic pressure (top number): pressure when the heart beats
  • Diastolic pressure (bottom number): pressure when the heart relaxes

A commonly used healthy goal for many adults is around below 120/80 mmHg, although your personal target may differ.

General blood pressure categories for adults

Blood pressure reading Category
Below 120/80 mmHg Normal
120–129 and below 80 Elevated
130–139 or 80–89 High blood pressure (Stage 1)
140 or higher or 90 or higher High blood pressure (Stage 2)
180 or higher and/or 120 or higher Very high — requires urgent attention, especially with symptoms

Does blood pressure normally rise with age?

Blood vessels often become less flexible as people get older, and blood pressure may increase. However, high blood pressure is not considered a normal or harmless part of aging because it raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other problems.

Approximate goals often used in adults

  • 18–64 years: Many adults are advised to aim for less than 130/80 mmHg if appropriate for their health.
  • 65+ years: Targets are individualized. Many older adults can still aim for around less than 130/80 mmHg, but doctors may adjust goals based on frailty, falls risk, medications, and other conditions
