How atorvastatin works
Atorvastatin blocks an enzyme in the liver involved in making cholesterol. This lowers:

- Triglycerides — another type of blood fat.
- It may slightly increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol in some people.

Possible side effects

Rarely, it can cause a serious muscle problem called rhabdomyolysis, which involves severe muscle pain, weakness, and possible kidney injury.

- Do not stop atorvastatin suddenly without talking to your healthcare provider, because stopping may increase cardiovascular risk in people who need it.
- Tell your clinician about other medicines and supplements you take, as some can interact with atorvastatin.
- Avoid or limit grapefruit and grapefruit juice if your healthcare professional has advised you to do so, because large amounts can affect how some statins are processed.
