How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

If your vertigo is caused by inner ear crystals (a condition called Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), the goal is not to dissolve or remove the crystals, but to guide them back to the part of the inner ear where they belong.

What are “inner ear crystals”?

Tiny calcium carbonate crystals normally sit in one part of the inner ear. In BPPV, some crystals become displaced into the semicircular canals, causing brief episodes of vertigo when you change your head position.

How are they treated?

The most effective treatment is a canalith repositioning maneuver, such as the:

  • Epley maneuver (most commonly used)
  • Semont maneuver (used in some cases)

These maneuvers use a sequence of head and body movements to move the crystals back into place. Many people improve after one or a few treatments, though symptoms can recur.

Can you do the maneuvers at home?

Some people perform the Epley maneuver at home after a healthcare professional has confirmed BPPV and identified which ear is affected. Doing the wrong maneuver or treating the wrong ear may not help and can sometimes worsen symptoms.

Things that may help

  • Move slowly when getting out of bed or looking up.
  • Stay well hydrated.
  • If you have frequent recurrences, ask your healthcare provider whether vestibular rehabilitation exercises are appropriate.

When to seek urgent medical care

Vertigo is not always caused by ear crystals. Seek emergency medical attention if vertigo is accompanied by:

  • Weakness or numbness on one side
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Double vision or sudden vision loss
  • Severe headache unlike your usual headaches
