The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in the Throat — and What Can Help

Having a constant feeling of mucus, phlegm, or “something stuck” in the throat is common and can have several causes. It does not always mean you have an infection.

Common causes

1. Postnasal drip

  • Mucus from the nose or sinuses drains down the back of the throat.
  • Common triggers include allergies, colds, sinus irritation, dust, and dry air.
  • Often causes throat clearing, coughing, or a lump-in-the-throat feeling.

2. Acid reflux (including “silent reflux”)

  • Stomach acid can irritate the throat even without obvious heartburn.
  • Possible signs:
    • Frequent throat clearing
    • Hoarseness
    • A sour taste
    • Coughing, especially at night

3. Allergies

  • Seasonal or indoor allergies can increase mucus production.
  • Dust mites, mold, pets, and pollen are common triggers.

4. Smoking or airway irritation

  • Smoke, pollution, and chemical fumes can inflame airways and increase mucus.

5. Dehydration or dry air

  • Thick mucus can be worse when you are not drinking enough fluids or when indoor air is very dry.

6. Respiratory conditions

  • Asthma, chronic bronchitis, or other lung conditions can cause ongoing mucus production, especially with coughing or wheezing.

Ways to reduce throat mucus

  • Drink enough fluids to help thin mucus.
  • Use a humidifier if indoor air is dry.
  • Try saline nasal rinses or sprays if nasal drainage is a problem.
  • Avoid smoke and strong irritants.
  • Manage reflux triggers:
    • Avoid large late-night meals.
    • Limit foods that clearly worsen symptoms.
    • Avoid lying down soon after eating.
  • Keep your environment clean if allergies are suspected
