Drinking Water on an Empty Stomach: Is It Really Beneficial?
You may have seen claims that drinking water first thing in the morning can “detox the body,” “flush out toxins,” or cure many health problems. While drinking water after waking up can be a healthy habit, many of these claims are overstated.
Possible benefits of drinking water in the morning
💧 1. Helps rehydrate your body
After several hours of sleep, your body has gone without fluids. A glass of water can help restore hydration.
🚽 2. May support regular bowel movements
For some people, drinking water—especially along with enough fiber in the diet—can help keep stools softer and support digestion.
🧠 3. Supports normal brain and body function
Even mild dehydration may contribute to:
- Tiredness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Headaches
🍽️ 4. May help with appetite awareness
Drinking water before eating may help some people feel fuller, which can support healthy eating habits.
What water does NOT do
There is no strong evidence that drinking water on an empty stomach:
❌ Removes “toxins” from the body (your liver and kidneys already do this)
❌ Melts fat by itself
❌ Cures diseases
❌ “Cleans” the stomach or intestines
Tips for healthy hydration
✅ Drink when you are thirsty and throughout the day.
✅ Increase fluids during hot weather or exercise.
✅ Choose water over sugary drinks most of the time.
