The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

5 Drinks That May Be Less Healthy for Your Bones

No single drink will “destroy” your bones, but regularly consuming certain beverages in large amounts may affect bone health—especially if they replace calcium-rich foods or are part of an overall unhealthy diet.

1. Sugary Soft Drinks 🥤

  • High in added sugar.
  • May replace milk or other calcium-rich drinks in the diet.
  • Frequent consumption is associated with poorer overall diet quality.

2. Excess Alcohol 🍷

Heavy alcohol use can:

  • Reduce bone formation.
  • Increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
  • Raise the risk of falls.

3. Energy Drinks ⚡

Often contain:

  • High amounts of caffeine
  • Large amounts of sugar

Excessive caffeine may slightly increase calcium loss, though moderate intake is generally not harmful if calcium intake is adequate.

4. Highly Sweetened Coffee Drinks ☕

Coffee itself is not harmful to bones for most people when consumed in moderation. However, large, sugary coffee beverages add excess calories and sugar.

5. Sugary Fruit Drinks 🍹

Many fruit-flavored drinks contain little real fruit and a lot of added sugar, offering few nutrients that support bone health.

Drinks that support bone health

✅ Milk or fortified plant-based milk
✅ Plain yogurt drinks (if tolerated)
✅ Water
✅ Calcium- and vitamin D-fortified beverages
