Vinegar: The Key to Whiter Whites and Softer Towels (But Most People Use It Wrong). Here’s the Right Way.

White vinegar is a popular laundry helper because it can reduce odors, soften fabrics, and help remove some detergent residue. However, it is not a magic replacement for detergent or a guaranteed “whitening” solution. Using it correctly matters.

How vinegar can help your laundry

1. Makes towels feel softer

  • Over time, detergent and fabric softener buildup can make towels stiff.
  • Vinegar’s mild acidity can help loosen some residue, allowing towels to feel more absorbent and less coated.

2. Helps remove odors

  • Vinegar can help neutralize some musty smells trapped in fabrics, especially towels and workout clothes.

3. Helps reduce detergent buildup

  • Using too much detergent can leave a film on clothes. A vinegar rinse may help remove some of that buildup.

The right way to use vinegar in laundry

Use white distilled vinegar.
It is colorless and less likely to stain fabrics.

Add it to the fabric softener compartment.
This releases it during the rinse cycle, where it works best.

Use a small amount.

  • About ½ cup (120 mL) for a regular load is usually enough.
  • For a smaller load, use less.

Use it occasionally rather than every wash if you prefer.
Many people find it useful for towels, sheets, and odor-prone clothing
