Vinegar: The Key to Whiter Whites and Softer Towels (But Most People Use It Wrong). Here’s the Right Way.
White vinegar is a popular laundry helper because it can reduce odors, soften fabrics, and help remove some detergent residue. However, it is not a magic replacement for detergent or a guaranteed “whitening” solution. Using it correctly matters.
How vinegar can help your laundry
1. Makes towels feel softer
- Over time, detergent and fabric softener buildup can make towels stiff.
- Vinegar’s mild acidity can help loosen some residue, allowing towels to feel more absorbent and less coated.
2. Helps remove odors
- Vinegar can help neutralize some musty smells trapped in fabrics, especially towels and workout clothes.
3. Helps reduce detergent buildup
- Using too much detergent can leave a film on clothes. A vinegar rinse may help remove some of that buildup.
The right way to use vinegar in laundry
✅ Use white distilled vinegar.
It is colorless and less likely to stain fabrics.
✅ Add it to the fabric softener compartment.
This releases it during the rinse cycle, where it works best.
✅ Use a small amount.
- About ½ cup (120 mL) for a regular load is usually enough.
- For a smaller load, use less.
✅ Use it occasionally rather than every wash if you prefer.
Many people find it useful for towels, sheets, and odor-prone clothing
