Baking Soda for Dark Spots and Wrinkles: A Simple Skin Habit?

That headline is misleading. Sodium bicarbonate is not a safe or effective treatment for dark spots or wrinkles.

🧠 What people claim it does

Viral posts often say baking soda can:

  • Fade dark spots
  • “Exfoliate” skin
  • Reduce wrinkles
  • Brighten complexion

But these claims are not supported by dermatology evidence.

⚠️ Why baking soda is risky for skin

🧪 1. Disrupts skin pH

  • Healthy skin is slightly acidic (protective barrier)
  • Baking soda is strongly alkaline → disrupts this barrier

🔥 2. Causes irritation

  • Can lead to redness, burning, dryness, and peeling

🧱 3. Weakens skin barrier

  • Makes skin more sensitive to sunlight and infection
  • Can actually worsen dark spots over time

⏳ 4. No proven anti-aging effect

  • Does not stimulate collagen or reduce wrinkles

❌ What it does NOT do

  • Does not remove pigmentation safely
  • Does not reverse wrinkles
  • Does not “detox” skin
  • Does not replace skincare treatments

🧴 What actually works better

For dark spots:

  • Sunscreen daily (most important)
  • Vitamin C serums
  • Niacinamide
  • Dermatologist-approved treatments

For wrinkles:

  • Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives)
  • Moisturizers with hyaluronic acid
