Peace lily: thanks to this one ingredient, it will bloom for up to 10 years in a row.

That claim is misleading. There isn’t a single ingredient that can make a peace lily bloom continuously for 10 years.

If you’ve seen headlines like “Thanks to this one ingredient, your peace lily will bloom for up to 10 years in a row,” they’re usually referring to homemade fertilizers such as banana peels, coffee grounds, rice water, or eggshells. While these can add small amounts of nutrients in some cases, none of them guarantees long-term flowering.

For a Peace lily to bloom regularly over many years, these factors matter much more:

  • Bright, indirect light: This is the biggest factor. Too little light often means healthy leaves but few or no flowers.
  • Consistent watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, but don’t let it stay waterlogged.
  • Balanced fertilizer: Feed with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) every 6–8 weeks during the growing season.
  • Humidity: Peace lilies prefer moderate to high humidity.
  • Repotting when needed: Repot every 2–3 years if the plant becomes root-bound.

If you want to use a natural fertilizer

A good option is compost or worm castings. They release nutrients slowly and are less likely to cause problems than household scraps.

Avoid adding large amounts of:

  • Coffee grounds directly to the soil (can encourage mold and alter soil conditions).
  • Banana peels buried in pots (they decompose slowly and may attract pests).
  • Eggshells expecting a quick calcium boost (they break down very slowly).

With proper care, a healthy peace lily can live well over 10 years and bloom repeatedly, but no single ingredient can reliably produce flowers for a decade on its own.
