5 Diabetes Symptoms That Appear at Night

Nighttime symptoms can sometimes be an early clue of Type 2 Diabetes, especially when blood sugar is fluctuating overnight. Here are 5 common ones people notice while trying to sleep or waking up at night:

1. Frequent nighttime urination (nocturia)
High blood sugar makes the kidneys pull extra water into urine, so you may wake up multiple times needing to use the bathroom.

2. Excess thirst that wakes you up
Because of fluid loss from urination, you may wake up feeling very dry-mouthed or intensely thirsty.

3. Night sweats, shaking, or sudden wake-ups (low blood sugar at night)
In some people—especially those on diabetes medication—blood sugar can drop too low during sleep, causing sweating, trembling, anxiety, or sudden awakening.

4. Tingling, burning, or “pins and needles” in feet or legs
Diabetic nerve irritation (neuropathy) often feels worse at night when you’re resting and more aware of sensations.

5. Restless sleep, fatigue, or frequent waking
Blood sugar swings can disrupt normal sleep cycles, leaving you waking up tired even after a full night in bed.

If these symptoms are happening regularly, it’s worth getting a blood sugar check. Early diabetes often shows up subtly at night before it becomes obvious during the day.
