If your veins are visible, it does not automatically mean something is wrong. Visible veins can be completely normal and are influenced by many factors, including:
- Low body fat: Less tissue under the skin can make veins easier to see.
- Genetics: Some people naturally have more prominent veins.
- Age: Skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity over time, making veins more noticeable.
- Exercise: Strength training and regular activity can increase muscle size and blood flow, making veins stand out.
- Heat and hydration: Warm temperatures and increased blood flow can make veins appear more prominent.
- Skin tone and thickness: Vein visibility varies naturally between people.
However, seek medical advice if visible veins are new or changing and are accompanied by:
- Pain, swelling, redness, or warmth in a vein
- A hard, tender vein
- Sudden swelling in one leg
- Skin color changes or sores near veins
Prominent, twisted, bulging veins in the legs may be related to Varicose veins, which are enlarged veins caused by problems with blood flow in the veins.
