That’s a common detox-style claim, but it’s not medically accurate.
Your colon does not store “10 pounds of waste” waiting to be flushed out overnight. In healthy people, the digestive system already moves waste out regularly. When people see quick weight drops after “cleanses,” it’s usually just:
- Water loss
- Stool already in the intestines
- Temporary bloating reduction
not removal of long-term “toxic buildup.”
What actually works (safely)
If the goal is better digestion or less bloating, these are evidence-based:
- Drink more water throughout the day
- Eat fiber-rich foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes)
- Regular physical activity (even walking helps bowel movement)
- Limit ultra-processed foods and excess salt
- If constipated: mild options like psyllium fiber or polyethylene glycol (doctor-approved laxative)
Be careful with “colon cleanse” products
Many over-the-counter detox teas or cleanses can:
- Cause dehydration
- Lead to electrolyte imbalance
- Irritate the intestines
- Create dependency for bowel movements
