If holes are appearing in multiple clothes over time, the most common causes are:
1. Clothes Moths
Webbing clothes moth and related clothes moths are a frequent culprit.
- They create irregular holes in natural fibers such as wool, cashmere, silk, and sometimes cotton blends.
- The larvae, not the adult moths, do the damage.
- You may notice small silken tubes, webbing, or larvae in closets, drawers, or stored clothing.
2. Carpet Beetles
Carpet beetle larvae can also eat natural fibers.
- Damage often resembles moth damage.
- Larvae are small, hairy, and may be found near clothing, carpets, or upholstered furniture.
3. Washing Machine or Dryer Damage
- Rough spots inside the drum can snag fabric.
- Zippers, hooks, or bra clasps can create tears during washing.
- Repeated friction can produce small holes that enlarge over time.
4. Friction and Wear
- Tiny holes near the waistline are often caused by clothing rubbing against belt buckles, countertops, desks, or seatbelts.
- T-shirts commonly develop small holes around the front lower area for this reason.
5. Rodents
House mouse or other rodents can chew larger holes, especially in stored clothing.
- Look for droppings, nesting materials, or gnaw marks.
How to identify the cause
Ask yourself:
- Are the holes mostly in natural fibers (wool, cashmere, silk)? → Moths or carpet beetles become more likely.
- Are they clustered around the waist or front of shirts? → Friction is likely.
- Do they appear after washing? → Check the washer and dryer.
- Are there both tiny and large irregular holes in stored clothes? → Consider insects or rodents.
What to do
- Inspect closets, drawers, and stored clothing.
- Wash or dry-clean affected items.
- Vacuum closets, carpets, and baseboards thoroughly.
- Store vulnerable clothes in sealed containers or garment bags.
- Check your washer and dryer for rough edges or protrusions.
If you can upload a photo of the holes and tell me:
- what type of clothing is affected,
- where on the garments the holes appear,
- and whether the clothes are stored in a closet or drawer,
