Mix toothpaste and Vaseline, I didn’t expect it to be so effective

It can feel effective at first, but that combo isn’t actually a good or safe skincare solution in most cases.

Toothpaste is designed for teeth, not skin. It often contains ingredients like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, menthol, and strong detergents that can dry out or irritate skin. That “clean, tight, reduced bump” feeling people notice is usually mild irritation—not real healing.

Vaseline (petroleum jelly) does the opposite: it locks moisture in and protects the skin barrier. So when you mix the two, you basically trap potentially irritating toothpaste ingredients against your skin under an occlusive layer. That can sometimes make a pimple look temporarily less inflamed, but it can also:

  • worsen redness or burning
  • clog pores for acne-prone skin
  • slow proper healing
  • trigger contact dermatitis in sensitive skin

If you used it for something like pimples, dark spots, or oily skin, there are safer options that actually target the cause:

  • Benzoyl peroxide for acne bacteria
  • Salicylic acid for clogged pores
  • Adapalene (retinoid) for long-term acne control
  • Simple moisturizer + sunscreen for barrier repair and marks

If you tell me what you used it for (acne, lips, dry skin, something else), I can suggest a safer routine that gets similar or better results without the irritation risk.
