Here’s a classic recipe for creamy, cheesy Scalloped Potatoes that serves about 6–8 people.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup shredded cheddar or Gruyère cheese
- Optional: chopped thyme or parsley
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in milk and cream until smooth.
- Add garlic, salt, and pepper. Simmer until slightly thickened.
- Layer half the potatoes in the baking dish.
- Pour over half the sauce and sprinkle with half the cheese.
- Repeat layers.
- Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake another 25–35 minutes until golden and tender.
- Rest 10 minutes before serving.
Tips
- Slice potatoes evenly (about 1/8 inch thick) for consistent cooking.
- For extra flavor, add caramelized onions or diced ham.
- Gruyère gives a richer flavor; cheddar makes it sharper and cheesier.
Great alongside roast chicken, ham, or steak.
