Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Gruyère cheese
  • Optional: chopped thyme or parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  4. Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute.
  5. Slowly whisk in milk and cream until smooth.
  6. Add garlic, salt, and pepper. Simmer until slightly thickened.
  7. Layer half the potatoes in the baking dish.
  8. Pour over half the sauce and sprinkle with half the cheese.
  9. Repeat layers.
  10. Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes.
  11. Remove foil and bake another 25–35 minutes until golden and tender.
  12. Rest 10 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • Slice potatoes evenly (about 1/8 inch thick) for consistent cooking.
  • For extra flavor, add caramelized onions or diced ham.
  • Gruyère gives a richer flavor; cheddar makes it sharper and cheesier.

Great alongside roast chicken, ham, or steak.
