a Creamy Caramel Custard

Here’s a simple, classic Creamy Caramel Custard recipe (also known as caramel pudding or flan-style dessert).

Caramel custard is a smooth baked or steamed dessert with a layer of soft caramel on top and silky custard underneath.


🍮 Ingredients

For caramel

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp water (optional, helps melting evenly)

For custard

  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

🍯 Instructions

1. Make the caramel

  • Heat sugar in a pan over medium heat
  • Let it melt slowly until golden brown
  • Quickly pour into a pudding mold or baking dish
  • Swirl to coat the base before it hardens

2. Prepare custard mixture

  • Warm milk (do not boil)
  • In a bowl, whisk eggs + sugar until smooth
  • Slowly add warm milk while stirring
  • Add vanilla extract

3. Combine and cook

  • Pour custard mixture over hardened caramel
  • Bake in a water bath (or steam) at 160–170°C (320–340°F) for 35–45 minutes
  • It’s done when the center is slightly wobbly

4. Cool and serve

  • Let it cool completely
  • Refrigerate at least 3–4 hours
  • Run a knife around edges and invert onto a plate

  • Soft caramel sauce on top
  • Light, creamy, and not overly sweet
