Amlodipine is a commonly used blood pressure medicine (a calcium channel blocker). Most people tolerate it well, but some side effects can be important enough that you shouldn’t ignore them.
Side effects you should take seriously
1. Swelling (especially ankles/feet)
- One of the most common effects
- Mild swelling is expected, but:
- sudden or severe swelling
- swelling with weight gain or shortness of breath
→ should be checked
2. Chest pain or worsening heart symptoms
- New or worsening chest pain is not normal
- Can indicate heart strain or underlying heart disease not controlled
3. Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
- Occasional mild palpitations can happen
- But persistent irregular rhythm or dizziness needs medical attention
4. Severe dizziness or fainting
- May suggest blood pressure is dropping too low
5. Shortness of breath
- Especially if it appears suddenly or worsens when lying down
6. Allergic reactions (rare but serious)
- Rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue
- Trouble breathing → emergency care
Common (usually not dangerous) side effects
- Headache
- Flushing (warmth/redness)
- Mild dizziness
- Fatigue
- Mild ankle swelling
When to act quickly
Seek urgent care if you notice:
- chest pain
- fainting
- severe swelling or breathing difficulty
- signs of allergic reaction
Important note
Don’t stop amlodipine suddenly on your own—blood pressure can rebound or worsen. Any changes should be discussed with a clinician.
If you want, tell me your dose and symptoms, and I can help you figure out whether what you’re feeling sounds expected or concerning.
