Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored With One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl
Bananas are one of the fastest-ripening fruits in many kitchens. While no storage trick can make bananas last forever, the right method can slow down ripening and reduce premature browning.
One simple kitchen item often recommended for helping bananas stay fresh is:
Plastic Wrap (or Reusable Wrap) Around the Stems
Bananas release a natural plant hormone called ethylene gas, which helps trigger ripening. The stems are one area where ethylene is released.
By covering the banana stems with:
- Plastic wrap
- Beeswax wrap
- A reusable silicone cover
you may slow the movement of ethylene around the fruit and help bananas ripen more gradually.
How to Store Bananas for Longer Freshness
1. Keep Them Away From the Fruit Bowl
Many fruits—especially:
- Apples
- Pears
- Avocados
- Tomatoes
also release ethylene gas. Storing bananas next to them can speed up ripening.
Better: Keep bananas separate on a counter or hang them from a banana hook.
2. Separate the Bunch
Bananas ripen together because they are connected.
Try:
- Breaking bananas apart individually
- Wrapping the stem ends
- Storing them at room temperature
This can help slow the process.
3. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat
Bananas ripen faster when exposed to:
- Warm temperatures
- Sunlight
- Heat from appliances
A cool, shaded spot is usually best.
4. Refrigerate When They Reach Your Preferred Ripeness
Putting green bananas in the refrigerator can slow ripening, but the peel may turn brown or black.
This does not necessarily mean the inside is spoiled. The fruit inside can remain firm and edible for several days.
What About Putting Bananas in a Bag?
A sealed plastic bag can sometimes make bananas ripen faster because it traps moisture and ethylene gas.
If you store them in a container:
- Use one that allows some airflow.
- Avoid trapping excess moisture
