Can One Kitchen Item Make Bananas Last 10 Days Longer?
You may have seen claims that a certain kitchen item can make bananas last much longer. The truth is that there is no guaranteed trick that keeps bananas fresh for exactly 10 extra days, but some storage methods can noticeably slow ripening.
The most effective simple trick: cover the stems
Bananas release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that speeds up ripening. Much of this gas is released around the stem area.
Try this:
- Separate bananas if you want them to ripen more slowly.
- Wrap the banana stems with:
- Plastic wrap, or
- A reusable silicone wrap/cover
- Store them at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
This may slow browning, although results vary.
Other ways to make bananas last longer
🍌 Keep them away from other ripening fruit
- Apples, pears, and other fruit also release ethylene and can speed ripening.
🍌 Use the refrigerator once they are ripe
- The peel may turn brown or black, but the inside can stay firm and edible longer.
🍌 Freeze ripe bananas
